Chris Ferguson earned his PHD from UCLA in
computer science
in 1999, after 13 years as a
graduate student. His parents
both have
doctorates, and his father Thomas Ferguson
teaches
game theory at UCLA. Ferguson grew up in a family
that loved to play and analyze games, and he uses his
training and analytical ability to get ahead in tournament
play.
In 2000 Ferguson won the WSOP main
event, a cash worth
1.5 million dollars. He
has been playing poker since the age
of 10 years
old, and began playing tournaments in the mid
90's, at which time he has said he made a conscious decision
to get really good at the game of poker. Tournament
play
was a way for him to play against the best
competitors in the
game without having to put up
the huge stake that cash
games demand.
Ferguson won another WSOP bracelet in 2000, the 2,500$ 7
Card Stud, and one more in 2001 in Omaha Hi-Low, followed
by two more in 2003. In 2008 Ferguson finished deep in
the
money at the Main Event, winning over
630,000$. His total
tournament winnings exceeds 7
million, a little more than 4
million of it coming
from WSOP cashes.
Although Chris is an
atheist, his nickname "Jesus" comes from
the
similarity of his looks to Jesus, with the long hair and
beard, and from the stillness he often adopts during
tournament play in order to avoid giving away his hand.
Ferguson won the 2008 National Heads-Up Poker
Championship, defeating Andy Bloch in the finals. He had
finished runner up in the two previous years, and has the
best overall tournament record there, 16-3. In 2004 Chris
help to launch the Full Tilt Poker site, which he is a
spokesperson for today. Learn more about Chris at Full
