Gus Hanson is a world
class backgammon player.

Gus Hansen has won a record of three World Poker
open titles, the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event,
and was the season one winner of the Poker
Superstars Invitational Tournament.
Before
turning pro as a poker player in 1997, Hansen was
already a world class backgammon player, and a youth tennis
champion. In 2000 he moved to New York City and tried
to make a living playing professional backgammon,
but found that there was too little interest in
the sport to make it worthwhile.
Hansen
started playing poker at the Ocean View Card Room in
Santa Cruz, California in 1993, while he was an exchange
student. He is notorious for his extremely loose, aggressive
play and raising with any two cards, which often cause his
opponents to misread him and call when he has a legitimate
hand. As of 2008 his total live tournament
winnings exceeded 7,000,000$.
Hansen finished in the money in the 2004 World Series Main
Event, and in 2006 Hanson cashed in the money in the 10K
Tournament of Champions, finishing 68th out of a field of
over 6,000.
Hansen is the only player to win
three World Poker Tour open tournaments. He
also won the first WPT Bad Boys of poker
invitational event. In 2004 he was inducted into the
World Poker Tour Walk of Fame, along with Doyle
Brunson and James Garner.
Even with all of his success Hansen has struggled with money
problems due to losses in cash games and sports betting,
although in recent years his online cash game totals put him
in the black by his own accounts. Hanson plays
exclusively at Full Tilt Poker, usually at
2,000$/4,000$ Omaha.
